小沃尔特﹒M﹒米勒于1923年生于美国南方。珍珠港事变后，他加入美国空军，成为无线电通讯员和机炮手，在意大利和巴尔干上空参加五十五次空战，其中包括引起很大争议的对卡西诺山本笃会修道院的空袭。正是这次空袭，使米勒在十五年后创作了《莱博维茨的赞歌》：一部发生在阴暗的修道院中的科幻小说。
