美國推理作家協會終身大師獎及英國推理作家協會金、銀匕首獎得主，曾任美國推理作家協會主席，在美國冷硬派推理作家中，有著上承雷蒙‧錢德勒，並啟發勞倫斯．卜洛克與丹尼斯．勒翰等後輩的大師級地位。
