克里福德·西马克(Clfford D. Simak,1904—1988)是美国著名的科幻作家。由于他出生并成长于美国西部的农村,因而在他的科幻作品中往往有一种浓郁的乡土气息,这使他独树一帜地开创了所谓“田园式”的科幻流派。西马克在一生中的大部分时间里都是一个新闻工作者,平时工作十分繁忙,创作时间相对稀少,但他仍然勤奋地创作。他的处女作《红太阳世界》于1931年一经发表即显得格外引人注目。此后西马克结识了著名科幻编辑小坎贝尔,并开始为《惊奇》等科幻杂志连续撰稿。在本世纪40年代,西马克发表了一系列样式新颖的科幻小说,在作品中他构造了由一条狗所“写”的独特历史,后来这些小说汇集成为一部作品——《城市》。
