Study on the Variation in Numbers and Scales of Xinjiang Cities during the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China He Yimin Huang Jun-peng Fu Juan

Abstract：During the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the republic of China，cities of Xinjiang had experienced important changes.Due to the establishment of Xinjiang Province in the late Qing Dynasty and the implementation of the local administrative system reformation，cities of Xi-njiang had been incorporated into a hierarchical administrative hierarchy system，and the number of cities had also increased as a result of the re-formation.After the establishment of the Republic of China，the local government of Xinjiang had further strengthened and perfected the administ-rative system at all levels with the support from the central government，and Xinjiang had successively experienced four stages of the period of Yang Zengxin，Jin Shuren，Sheng Shicai administration and the direct governing by national government，which increased the numbers of Xinjiang cities.With the reformation of local administrative system，the development of society and economy and the growth of population，the urban scale of Xinjiang had been enlarged simultaneously，and the modern-contemporary urban of Xinjiang had been preliminarily established.This paper focus-es on the relationship between the reformation of the administrative system and the variation in numbers of Xinjiang cities which embody the vari-ation of urban population scale and land occupation scale in different stages.
