The Construction of Tuoba's Ancestral Identification with the Yellow Emperor in Northern Wei Dynasty
Wu Honglin
Abstract:After Hu nationalities in north area established their regimes in Sixteen Kingdoms period and Northern dynasties, the problem oflegitimacy has come up to them, and one of the most important methods to it is to attribute their ancestors to Huaxia. Therefore,Tuoba Xianbeiconnected their ancestor to Huaxia's ancestor—Yellow Emperor. The construction of Tuoba's ancestral identification is a process from passiveacceptance to active ingratiation,in which Han people contribute a lot.Wei Cao is the first one who related Tuoba with Yellow Emperor in Daiperiod, whose theory stalled when Dai was eliminated by Later Qin.Cui Hong, the Han scholar and others brought up this theory again whenTuoba reestablished their regime. The government took some measures to reinforce the theory, such as to host sacrificial rite of Yellow Emperor,etc..However,this ancestral identity had not reached the consensus of the community and from time to time there were other views, such as theywere the descendants of Li Ling which was hold by southern regime, not claimed by Tuoba themselves. In the period of Emperor Xiaowen, theEmperor Xiaowen who was determined to reform and promote Han culture once again made it clear that Tuoba's ancestral roots should be tracedback to the Yellow Emperor.Since then,Tuoba's statement had been accepted by all sectors of society, and the construction of Tuoba's YellowEmperor ancestor identification was finally completed.
