Gao XiDepartment of History,Fudan University
Abstract Medical education played a significant role in the 19th century introduction of Western medicine into China. But what kind of medicalinstruction model was better for the development of western scientific medicine in China? To answer this question, this article explores thedifferences between Myers' instructive model and the prevailing ones adopted for medical missions in the 19th century China,by analyzing themedical examinations three medical students took in Hong Kong and Chines under the supervision of British Dr.W.Myers and the acting “MedicalCadet Detachment” at the Viceroy Li Hung Chang's barrack in Tientsin. It is argued that a secular medical education model emerged in the medicaleducation market under the control of the medical mission, and that there existed disagreement and contradictions between the two models.Theauthor argues that scientific medicine became feasible in China when the secular environment for medical education formed, the national healthsystem established and the western Chinese physicians were acknowledged.

Abstract Founded in 1838,Medical Missionary Society in China (MMSC) was not only the first medical society in modern China, but alsothe first medical missionary society in the world. From the beginning,it was characterized by its internationalization. It was set up in Canton byforeigners both from Britain and from America. Due to that it created and kept relations with those people in Britain,American and other places, and therefore established international nets of interpersonal relations and obtained sources of funds. MMSC played an important role in thedevelopment of medical missionary enterprise, but in 1845 it was divided;at the same time, the Christian propaganda also changed. ThenMMSC became to be localized. After China Medical Missionary Association was founded in 1886,MMSC became a completely local missionarysociety in Canton. The change of MMSC was not only an outcome of the change of the relations between foreigners in China and foreign countriesand China, but also an embodiment of the internationalization and localization processes.
